86 RACISM:
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As we collectively consider our role in the fight for racial justice, we as a restaurant group want to firmly align ourselves with BIPOC. At their core, restaurants bring people together. What we share when gathered around tables goes beyond the food on our plates. It’s the dialogue and discourse, the thoughtful discussions, the sometimes heated arguments that make these places special. While the current health crisis has threatened our establishments, we as an industry have pressed on, not just for our livelihoods, but for our humanity. Now more than ever, coming together is essential and we seek to apply that same perseverance to addressing our nation’s problematic treatment of people of color.
Our group is committed to fostering an environment where everyone has a place at the table, our guests and staff alike. We cannot promise to do so perfectly – but we promise we will listen and we promise we will learn.
We will be reviewing our policies companywide to ensure our mission statement is explicit: we have zero-tolerance for discrimination or harassment of any kind. We will be reminding management of their unique responsibility to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace and encouraging our staff to come forward should they witness or experience behavior that threatens the environment we are striving to create.
In addition to updating our policy, on Thursday, June 25th, the staff of our restaurant group wore shirts with a call to “86 RACISM”. For our comrades in the restaurant industry, the shirts require no explanation. For those unfamiliar with the term “86”, it is used to signify something we’re out of, getting rid of, something that is no longer on the menu.
Additionally, 20% of proceeds from all of our businesses generated on the 25th as well as 100% of proceeds from 86 RACISM t-shirt sales are being donated to both the Color of Change & NAACP organizations. Thanks to all who dined at our locations and purchased a t-shirt. With your help, we collectively raised $10,589.37!
Our industry is built on cultural diversity – the range of cuisines and the people who inspire, craft and serve them is testament to that. We hope our company’s treatment of all people reflects our desire to celebrate diversity and champion lasting change.
